Recognition in India

No “NMC-approved list” exists — recognition is criteria-based.

criteria-based (FMGL 2021) — confirmed per university, never a guarantee. To practise in India you must also clear the FMGE (or NExT once active) and complete a 12-month CRMI internship.

NEET-qualified (for admissions on/after May 2018 the NEET result itself is deemed the Eligibility Certificate — Gazette 01.03.2018, per the NBEMS FMGE bulletin); program must meet FMGL 2021 (54-mo, English, same-institution internship).

A listing in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) is a directory entry only — by itself it is not recognition, accreditation, or endorsement by the NMC or WDOMS. It is one of the FMGL-2021 criteria, not a guarantee.

The city

The city, for an Indian student

Nukus (pop. ~332,500, 2022) is Karakalpakstan's capital, about 800 km northwest of Tashkent (1,255 km by road), on the Amu Darya beside the Kyzylkum desert. The climate is cold-desert: long, very hot, dry summers and short, cold winters. Nukus International Airport has regular Tashkent flights; rail and three bus stations link the city across Uzbekistan, Central Asia and Russia. The city's Savitsky Museum holds the second-largest collection of Russian avant-garde art — The Guardian called it 'one of the most beautiful museums in the world' — and the Mizdakhan necropolis and Chilpik Zoroastrian tower are nearby.

Straight answers

Karakalpak Medical Institute — frequently asked

What does MBBS at Karakalpak Medical Institute cost?

Tuition is about USD 3500 per year — checked against the university’s own official fee source (Jun 2026); fees in local currency move with the exchange rate. Add living costs and one-time expenses for the real all-in figure; our cost calculator itemises all three for this university.

Is Karakalpak Medical Institute recognised for practising in India?

There is no "NMC-approved university" list — recognition is criteria-based under FMGL 2021. Confirm this specific programme is at least 54 months, fully English-medium, with the 12-month internship at the same institution, and WDOMS-listed, before enrolling. After graduating you must also clear the FMGE (or NExT once active) and complete a 12-month CRMI internship in India.

How long is the MBBS programme at Karakalpak Medical Institute?

72 months (6 years), taught in English. For India-return, the FMGL-2021 minimum is 54 months excluding internship — always confirm the exact structure in writing from the university.

Is Karakalpak Medical Institute listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools?

Yes. It appears as 'Medical Institute of Karakalpakstan', Nukus, Uzbekistan, with FAIMER School ID F0000700 and 'currently operational' status; WDOMS also records ECAQA programme accreditation granted for 5 years on 20 November 2025.

Is the General Medicine programme available in English?

The official site confirms academic groups taught in English alongside Karakalpak, Uzbek and Russian, and the WDOMS entry lists English among the programme's languages of instruction. Confirm current English-batch availability with the admissions office before applying.

Is the institute 'NMC approved' for Indian students?

No university anywhere is 'NMC approved' — India maintains no such list. Recognition of a foreign MBBS is criteria-based under the NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 (minimum 54-month degree, internship, screening/NExT). KKMI's 6-year programme should be checked against these criteria.

How long is the course and what does it cost?

General Medicine runs 6 years (WDOMS notes it changed from 7 to 6 years in 2017). The official contract fee for foreign citizens is USD 3,500 per year; hostel and living costs are extra and not published on the English site.
